It does not happen often in the history of cinema to tell stories beyond the standardly approved by the society human relations. Marianne is a talented young painter who also teaches painting lessons. She lives freely in France at the end of the 18th century when women did not have many options in life. Getting married and having children is the standard scenario but Marianne is not willing to be part of it. That is why when she receives a very special order for a wedding portrait of a young woman, the painter doesn’t hesitate but embark to the remote island in Brittany where her client lives. Arriving at the small community, Marianne meets Héloïse, who is obliged to marry the ex-fiancé of her dead sister. The situation gets even more complicated as the time goes by and the two young women spend a lot of time together.
