Henri Charriéres beskyldes for at have slået en alfons ihjel. På trods af at Charríere fastholder, at han er uskyldigt dømt, deporteres han snart efter til en fjerntliggende ø, der fungerer som straffekoloni i Fransk Guinea. For Charriére - også kaldet Papillon - er der kun én ting, der holder modet oppe hos ham, og det er den tid, han bruger på at planlægge sin flugt væk fra øen. Danske Michael Noer har instrueret genindspilningen af det klassiske thriller drama PAPILLON fra 1973. I hovedrollen som Papillon ses Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Kong Arthur). I øvrige roller ses bl.a. Roland Møller, Rami Malek (Old Boy) og Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies). "Papillon" er baseret på Henri 'Papillon' Henri Charrières autentiske bestseller.

Being a remake of the 1973 film starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, “Papillon” tells the incredible story of a French murder convict. Henri Charrière (Charlie Hunnam), nicknamed "Papillon", was unjustly imprisoned in 1933 but managed to escape in 1941, thanks to the financial support of another convict, Louis Dega (Rami Malek). They were both detained on a colony on the Devil’s Island in French Guiana, South America. While Charrière and Dega disliked each other at first, later, in the colony, they decided to become allies and regain their freedom. The cooperation between the two convicts was not only successful, it led to something equally precious as freedom is – an everlasting friendship.
