Vores Charlie arbejder ved samlebåndet på en gigantisk fabrik, hvor han dag efter dag strammer skruer. Efter kort tid føler han sig fremmedgjort fra sit arbejde og helt galt går det, da han bliver udvalgt til et eksperiment med en ny maskine. Chefen tror, han er blevet vanvittig og Charlie bliver indlagt på et sindssygehospital. Siden ender han i fængsel, mistænkt for at være kommunist, da han har viftet med et rødt flag. Da han bliver løsladt igen, slår han pjalterne sammen med en forældreløs pige.

One of the eternal silent film classics, written and directed by the genial Charlie Chaplin. The year is 1936 and his iconic Little Tramp character has a hard time, struggling to survive in the fast paced, industrialized world that is more and more dominated by machines. Being a factory employee working on an assembly line, one day he is forced-fed by a broken “feeding machine” and as a result, our friend gets a nervous breakdown, running out of the factory anf leaving a chaos behind his back. “Modern Times” conveys a strong social and ethical message, asking questions about the place of ordinary people, of humanity in the modern society.
